WALKING AND HIKING:LYNMOUTH AND COUNTISBURY PROBABLY OFFER THE BEST HIKING AND WALKING TRAILS IN THE COUNTRY. We believe that The Blue Ball Inn is located in the heart of the walking and hiking capital of UK. The Blue Ball Inn is the ideal place from which to explore the outdoors, with over 1000km of footpaths and bridleways. Some of the most spectacular trails passing the Blue Ball Inn include the South West Coastal Path which is a distance of 630 miles making it the longest National Trail in Britain, the 103 mile Two Moors Way footpath which is the oldest regional footpath in Devon, and The Tarka Trail which is over 180 miles in length and extends through North and Mid Devon.
Cycling: Cycle hire is available locally and the area around the Blue Ball Inn enables cyclists and mountain bikers to enjoy some of the most beautiful country lanes, bridleways and special trails. Bike hikes with a National Park Ranger are available.
Horse Riding: With over 600km of bridleways Exmoor is a great place to explore on horseback. Riding lessons, trekking and hacks are available from farms and established riding stables all within minutes of The Blue Ball Inn.
Surfing: When the right conditions prevail the surf at Lynmouth Bay, one and a half miles from the Blue Ball Inn, is a regional classic. Surfing is ideal for the experienced surfer with a point-break together with a west, south-west swell and a southerly wind.
Golfing: North Devon boasts a number of excellent golf courses which range from the links courses along the coastline to the wonderful parkland courses. The oldest links course in England is at the Royal North Devon Golf Club at Westward Ho!. Other courses include Saunton, Portmore, Minehead & West Somerset, Ilfracombe, Torrington, Hartland Forest and Holsworthy.
Fishing: The Blue Ball Inn is in the centre of an area famous for fishing including still water, river, shore, and sea fishing and permits can be obtained locally for fishing on the Lyn, which is a beautiful river with a good run of salmon as well as sea trout and brown trout. Sea Fishing and boat trips are also available from Lynmouth Harbour, with grey mullet and bass from the harbour arm, drift fishing for Pollack and mackerel and tope, skate and conger in Lynmouth Bay.
Rock Climbing: The area provides an ideal and safe environment to enjoy climbing from novice through to the more experienced climber. Some of Devon's leading climbing instructors will take you on the spectacular climbs that can be found along North Devon's rugged coastline and remote hills.
Shooting: Excellent shooting is available at the North Devon Shooting Ground and South West Shooting School, both within 25 minutes of The Blue Ball Inn. Both grounds offer clay target shooting in beautiful valley settings. There are numerous shoots across Exmoor with some of the best commercial shoots in England including world-class partridge and pheasant shooting.
Canoeing: Only a few minutes away from the Blue Ball Inn is the East Lyn River which, from Watersmeet to Lynmouth Harbour, provides excellent and challenging conditions for canoeing all year round. Exmoor Canoe Club is made up of beginners to experienced BCU coaches and is open to anyone who would like to learn to canoe.
Cricket: Approximately three miles from the Blue Ball Inn, just east of Lynton is the Valley of Rocks, where competitive cricket matches are played most weekends throughout the season in probably one of the most picturesque settings in England.
Coastal Boat Trips: Depart from Lynmouth harbour, approximately one and a half miles from the Blue Ball Inn. This coastal boat trip includes beautiful views along the heritage coastline where you will see England's highest sea cliffs and get close to nesting seabirds in their sanctuary at the Valley of the Rocks & Lee Bay.
Adventure pursuits: Use the Blue Ball Inn as a centre for Hang Gliding which is available at permitted sites at Bossington near Porlock and North Hill at Minehead. Paint-balling, go-karting, quad-biking, 4-by-4 driving are also all available locally, as well as the usual water sports associated with a coastal town there is Kayaking on the East Lyn, surfing off Lynmouth beach, kite surfing at Woolacombe, Croyde or Saunton sands and sea fishing.
